History Of The Color WheelThe first color wheel has been attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, who in 1706 arranged red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet into a natural progression on a rotating disk. As the disk spins, the colors blur together so rapidly that the human eye sees white. From there the organization of color has taken many forms, from tables and charts, to triangles and and wheels the history.(via @megzo)

Amidst all the 3D television at last week’s CES, Chinese manufacturer Haier showed off a television that had a different kind of cutting-edge technology. The television was designed to be completely wireless, relying on wireless technology not only for content, but also for power.

Using a magnetic-based power system developed by MIT spin-off company WiTricity, the television is capable of receiving 100 W of power from up to about a meter away. The power unit plugs into the wall and sends power via radio waves to the electromagnetic coil in the back of the television. And voila—power without a power cord.

Inventor Spot

YES!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been waiting for this for a loooooooong time!

The wireless revolution of the past decade has been held back by the need for energy. So, while we have improved batteries somewhat, we are still essentially tethered down. As such, scientists have been working on wireless energy. Actually, the idea goes back to Tesla, but we’re seeing marketable advances now. With any luck, we could be completely wireless in 10 years. Incredible.

Similarly, Japan recently reported (e.g. here) a plan to build a giant solar cell in outer space which would collect the sun’s energy and then wirelessly beam it down to earth for use. Awesome. I love science!
